Sunrise Medical: Making the Most of Global Sites
|
"A jointly staffed team of Sunrise professionals, related software partners
and Integware were assembled and tasked with delivering the "One Sunrise"
initiative. The result is a solution that is deployed across nine sites
worldwide to address document creation, approval and file vaulting.
IntegWare's experience and expertise with global manufacturers in the
medical industry was key in delivering a solution that exceeded expectations
and was on schedule."

- Sunrise Medical HHG, Inc.
Sunrise Medical, in partnership with IntegWare Inc., is driving changes in their
engineering process that will generate substantial savings for the corporation
over the next 18 months. Sunrise has design and manufacturing operations
located across the globe supporting the development and production of several
major product lines. This new initiative will allow Sunrise to operate in a
"design anywhere, build anywhere" mode that fully capitalizes on the strengths
and capabilities of each of their global sites. In addition to satisfying the
financial business drivers for this change, the new infrastructure of increased
collaboration in design and manufacturing will reduce engineering rework and
improve efficiencies across a global supply chain.
As a leading homecare and extended care product manufacturer, Sunrise Medical is
dedicated to enabling individual independence and improving the quality of life.
Their wide range of products addresses the recovery, rehabilitation and
respiratory needs of patients in institutional and homecare settings. Products
are available through Sunrise distributors worldwide. Over the past 20 years
Sunrise Medical has acquired companies from which many processes and procedures
were inherited. Several different engineering change processes were identified
in the United States alone. Additionally, a medley of CAD packages created
difficulties in sharing part related information that had to be accessed across
many global sites. In short, Sunrise was not operating as a single global
company and was instead continuing to function as a conglomerate of disparate
global entities. Within their localized markets and local network of suppliers,
these entities produced a very competitive and high-quality product. From a
Sunrise corporate perspective, however, there was room for improvement through
greater collaboration between these global sites.
Sunrise Medical knew it was time to take action and launched an initiative to
redefine engineering processes and data formats, into a single "One Sunrise"
global Sunrise Medical product development solution. A jointly staffed team of
Sunrise professionals, related software partners and Integware were assembled
and tasked with delivering systems to meet these global needs. The result is a
solution that is deployed across nine sites worldwide to address document
creation, approval and file vaulting. The initial implementation is a worldwide
document management system that will soon include standardized processes to
store all product information. IntegWare embarked on an implementation of
MatrixOne's eMatrix Engineering Central UI3 for Sunrise to support their new
global activity. This included global document management and release, PDF
Conversion, workflow, approval processes and notifications. The system also
includes processes to automate reminder notifications to reviewers as well as
implementing other various business rules. This will help move Sunrise toward
the goal of a streamlined, common, global product design-to-delivery process.
Additionally, IntegWare's experience and expertise with global manufacturers in
the medical industry was key in delivering a solution that exceeded expectations
and was on schedule.
The new system is currently expanding to include Engineering Change Management,
Part and Configured Feature/Option BOM management and integration to Sunrise's
current ERP system. This new, unified worldwide process, supported by leading
edge technology, now allows Sunrise to take greater advantage of its position as
a global company. Sunrise can plan manufacturing and inventory in accordance
with regional needs as well as global ones and leverage design data from one
continent to the next. This will generate significant savings through the
elimination of redesign work and drastically improved resource and supply chain
management with better access to global resources.
